International sculptor, Lorenzo Quinn, announces his new solo exhibition at Galleria Ca’ d’Oro Miami, marking a pivotal moment in the artist’s career. During Art Basel season his sculptures will be also exhibited at the same time at the Art Fair Context/Art Miami in Wynwood and in the beautiful Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.
Entitled Poems, the show will feature a visible artistic progression, highlighting the sculptor’s experimentation with new mediums and subject matter, resulting in subtly abstracted ways of relaying his universal message to his viewers. New titles and finishes are interspersed with some of his more familiar works, leading to the notion of a mini-retrospective – a showcase of his creative development over the last several decades.
‘This is a new view – something I have not talked about in the past. In a way, I’m abstracting my message, my story. Before, the love was always represented by hands in different positions. Now it has morphed into representative materials: a gold stone represents faith; a red stone, the passion; stainless steel for friendship; and wood to represent the warmth of family. The figures, of course, represent the balance.’

At his sculpture foundry, set back in the mountains of Spain, Quinn and his team of skilled artisans still employ the antiquated ‘lost-wax’ process to create his works of art. An initial model must be created, which contains an impression, or negative space within the positive mould. The resulting wax mould then becomes the receptacle for the molten bronze which has been heated to an incredible temperature of nearly 2200 degrees Fahrenheit (1200 degrees Celsius). Once the bronze has set, the wax will be melted from its ceramic shell, by heating the whole entity in an autoclave. When the wax is eliminated and the ceramic shell has cooled, it is then broken, revealing the inner sculpture which is now set in bronze.
Quinn’s historic connection to the Masters of the past, through his technique and execution, is undeniable. In the same vein, he often employs age-old symbols and icons within his work. Traditionally, the circle has always been taken as a symbol of infinite continuity. Adjectives such as metamorphosis, equilibrium and evolution come to mind, suggesting themes of adaptation, balance and harmony – words that have also been used as exhibition titles for a selected number of Quinn’s exhibitions in the past.
Ever present in Quinn’s body of work, the ideals and universal characteristics of love and relationships are still portrayed. However, the artist also turns away from interdependence, allowing for an alternative focus on individuality and independence.
Poems, as an exhibition, in a way represents the many faces of Lorenzo Quinn as an artist and as a person – an overall scope of the artist’s legacy, hints of his future trajectory, and everything that has come in between.
LORENZO QUINN
For Quinn, sculpture is primarily an art of communication, a medium through which he aims to bring tolerance, understanding and harmony. ‘I make art for myself and for people who wish to come along for a ride through my dreams’, he says. ‘How we live our own lives is of the utmost importance, and my work is to do with values and emotions.’
Born in Rome to the Mexican-American actor Anthony Quinn and his second wife, Iolanda Addolori, Lorenzo Quinn had a childhood split between Italy and the USA. His father had a profound influence on him, both in terms of living in the limelight of the film world and with respect to Anthony Quinn’s early work in painting and architecture. Studying at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York, Quinn planned to be a Surrealist painter. However, at 21 he decided that his future lay in sculpture, which could better accommodate his energy and originality.
Among the artists who influence Quinn are Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin. Quinn usually conceives each work in writing, and the poetic text is ultimately displayed with the sculpture, as an integral part of the piece, not merely an explanation.
Quinn’s work appears in many private collections throughout the world and has been exhibited internationally during the past 20 years.

CONTEXT - the sister fair to Art Miami, now in its 24th year as the longest-running art fair in Miami – is committed to the development and reinforcement of emerging and mid-career artists. Providing the ultimate platform for established and emerging galleries to present cutting-edge works, CONTEXT creates a meaningful dialogue between artists, galleries and collectors. In its second year, sixty-five international galleries, vetted by a selection committee of contemporary art professionals, will exhibit highlights from their gallery programs, solo artist exhibitions and curated projects. The Cracking Art Group consists of six international artists: Renzo Nucara, Carlo Rizzetti, Marco Veronese, Alex Angi, Kicco, and William Sweetlove. In its REgeneration Art Project, the group creates public art using recyclable plastic. Plastic as the medium for its own aesthetic appeal, accepting the inevitability of our world becoming more and more artificial, and using the material’s artificiality to express their artistic sense. The plastic triggers a social phenomenon, of which both the material and the art are available to everyone, and in utilizing recyclable plastic to demonstrate an intelligent use of the material. With their bold visuals, the artists of the Cracking Art Group aim to link the environmental consciousness to individuals through their installations, in which super-size and visually colored animals appear unexpectedly in everyday places. These big, vibrant animals invite viewers to re-examine their perspectives on urban life and inspire people to play with their cities. It is the artists’ hope that their art will eventually enable us to regenerate our natural and social environment into a healthy and animated space.
The Cracking Art Group has brought its message of social and environmental awareness to over 600 exhibitions worldwide, including an installation of blue turtles for the G8 Summit 2009 in Italy and the invasion of the sensational pink snails during Art Basel Miami 2010. The following year, blue snails were featured in Italy during the Venice Biennale 2011 and orange snails in the Rome Sculpture Biennale. In 2012, the blue crocodile was displayed at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Florida, while the animals took over the historic Freedom Tower in FOREVERGLADES public art installation in connection with Miami Dade’s College Museum of Art + Design during Art Basel Miami. Earlier this year, REgeneration Art Project installed blue snails at the top of the most important and largest cathedral in Italy, Duomo di Milano, as well as the birth of the new animal – Mama Frog – visiting the Island of San Servolo during the 55th Venice Biennale. The Frost Art Museum located in Miami, a major cultural institution in Florida, recently acquired the crocodile sculpture as part of the collection for Art Basel Miami 2013.
Through the ongoing support of Galleria Ca ‘d’Oro and complemented by Villa Firenze Foundation, the REgeneration Art Project is now embarking on the most populous urban community in the world, New York City. Red snails will inhabit Central Park from November 9 through December 3, 2013, before moving to Columbus Circle from December 5 to January 6, 2014. Additionally, the red snails will take refuge at Eataly, purveyor of gourmet Italian foods from December 1 through 20.

barbara | maggio 14th, 2013 - 22:24One of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors, Simon Gudgeon has developed a minimalist, semi-abstract style, capturing movement and emotion with a visual harmony that is unmistakably his own. Working primarily in bronze, his pared-down approach to sculpture embodies the flowing line of the natural form, turning it into something less detailed, more abstract.
Gudgeon’s work is featured in important private collections around the world including those of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, plus several art museum collections in the USA.
In 2009, Gudgeon’s iconic sculpture Isis was installed in Hyde Park in London, the first such installation there for over 50 years and in July 2012 the NMWA unveiled Isis in their Sculpture Trail in Jackson Hole. The piece is the only sculpture by a British sculptor to be installed in the Trail.
Recent projects include the launch of a new series of kinetic sculptures at a one-man exhibition in London, entitled Transitions and at SOFA Chicago 2013 in November of this year. These carefully engineered sculptures are based on balance and movement, while simultaneously adjusting to the weather patterns of their potential outdoor placement.
Always challenged and excited by the extremes and dynamics of nature, Gudgeon is relentlessly innovative in the studio, aiming to ‘move away from the purely representational towards something that has a deeper subtext and, as it expresses … thoughts and emotions, is more satisfying to create’.

Alfredo Rapetti Mogol, world-famous lyricist (winner of numerous Grammy Awards for his song lyrics) and one who has collaborated, also at intellectual level, with some of the greatest musicians, sees in his paintings a unification of words, image and music, his three greatest passions. The paintings become a visualisation of a mental and psychological process. Thanks to a special technique known as impuntura (stitching), the action of painting merges with the act of writing. His works are created on canvas and paper coated with a thick layer of cement, bitumen and acrylic, which acts as a three-dimensional material support for the scoring of marks, traces and graffiti.
The great surrealist artist, Dali, needs no introduction. For his iconic style and genius is famous worldwide. The Dali sculptures showcased in this exhibition have been displayed in famous cities such as London, Paris, Berlin, Singapore, Florence, New York, Shanghai and now, Miami. This is a rare and unique occasion to view an enthralling collection which attests to Dalí’s talent and his untamed imagination; it offers the general public a surreal and unique experience.
“I love collaborating with other organizations. We believe that art should be seen not only in museums and galleries, but also in spaces that engage in different activities, such as Fendi Casa. Alfred Rapetti Mogol is one of the artists discovered by Galleria Ca’d’Oro. We held his first solo show in our gallery in Rome in 2003 and now we introduce his work to Miami. About Alfredo Rapetti Mogol:
Alfredo Rapetti Mogol was born in Milan in 1961 and his artistic education owed much to the family background, in which an air of music, literature and poetry had been breathed for generations. While still very young, Rapetti Mogol was introduced by his maternal grandfather, Alfredo De Pedrini, President of the Graphic Arts Association, into the artistic milieu of Milan. He conceived a passion for painting, with which he combined training at the Milan Cartoon School as well as publishing activities. He experimented with various styles of painting, resulting in an invitation in 1966 to join the studio of the artists Alessandro Algardi and Mario Arlati, and to share in their pictorial research. In the atelier in Via Nota, Rapetti worked intensely for four years, gradually coming to the conviction that he would have to unite his two greatest passions, writing and painting, positing them as visualisations of the mental and psychological process. With the aid of a special technique known as impuntura (stitching), the action of painting is fused with the act of writing, and the words begin to be marked not just on paper, but also on canvas.
The marks, signs, traces and graffiti of a creative and conscious humanity – Rapetti Mogol’s works follow the ideal path of pictorial script: – the more universal it is, the more breaks into splinters and challenges centuries of art history, from the historic Avant-garde to Conceptualism, by way of the Spatialist experiments of Lucio Fontana and the abstract writings of the 1950s
Once he had found a form of expression congenial to his poetic vision, there was no stopping him. A veritable explosion of exhibitions, both solo and collective, have been held since the late 1990s and the artist, as indefatigable as his work, constantly flits between Italy and the rest of the world – universal, indeed. His most notable exhibitions were held at the Museo della Permanente, Milan, 2002, the Salon d’Automne Paris, Espace Charenton in November 2004, the Mars Contemporary Art Gallery, Moscow, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, the Riga Foreign Art Museumand the Grand Palais, Paris, with the show “Comparaisons”. Among solo shows worth mentioning were those at the Galleria Cà d’Oro in Roma, 2003, the KPMG Foundation of Berlin, in the same year, the Galleria Maretti Arte Monaco in Montecarlo and Villa Olmo, Como, in 2004, L’Albergo delle Povere di Palermo, in 2005, and in the following year at the Certosa di San Lorenzo, Padula, Salerno. In 2009, 80 of his works were exhibited at the Palazzo della Ragione, Mantua. In 2010, under the aegis of the De Chirico Foundation, he exhibited in three prestigious US museums and universities, including New York University and the Santa Monica Sculpture Gallery, and he held a one-man-show at the Mudima Foundation in Milan.
FOREVERGLADES – William Sweetlove & Cracking Art Group @ Freedom Tower

Galleria Ca D’oro is pleased to present FOREVERGLADES an environmentally minded public art exhibition by International Artists William Sweetlove and artists collective, Cracking Art Group. Presented in partnership with Miami Dade’s College Museum of Art + Design and famed Swiss watchmaker Girard-Perregaux, FOREVERGLADES will open with a public reception on Friday, November 30th, at 7pm at MDC’s historic Freedom Tower. The exhibition will run through Saturday, January 26th, 2013.
FOREVERGLADES, an interior and exterior installation in the public realm, establishes a locally conscious perspective focusing on environmental protection, sustainability, and advocacy of South Florida’s National Parks and Preserves. An exhibition unlike anything else of its kind, FOREVERGLADES will encompass a presentation of 300 animals made out of recyclable plastic, resin, and aluminum, native of South Florida, including three specific regional species: native alligators, sea turtles, and frogs literally crawling up, down and around Miami Dade College’s nationally historic building – a feat never before attempted on the famed structure. For the European-based artists, William Sweetlove and Cracking Art Group, the animals were researched and selected for the important role each play in the development and history of our local landscape.
Accompanying the exhibition, the museum in partnership with the MDC Earth Ethics Institute, US National Parks Conservation Association, Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Dry Tortugas National Park and Big Cypress Preserve will present: FOREVERGLADES: here today, hopeful for tomorrow, a one-day educational symposium on Friday, November 30th at the MDC Freedom Tower. The one-day event will feature panel discussions, exhibitions, and performances focusing on the education of advocacy for our fragile South Florida landscape and how artists seek unique ways to present the message. The future may be unknown for the Florida Everglades, but FOREVERGLADES is a true testament to how artists use art to create public awareness for the world we compromise in hopes it will exist forever.
Additional support for FOREVERGLADES is provided by the Consulate General of Italy, Consulate General of Belgium, Consulate General of France, Gulliver Preparatory School and the Biscayne Nature Center. The official opening event for “2013, Year of Italian Culture in the US,” will also take place during the opening of FOReverglades with the patronage of the Consulate General of Italy in Miami and the European Ministry of the Environment.
