MIAMI CHILDREN’S MUSEUM’S BE A KID AGAIN 2011 GALA

From Art Basel Miami Beach, to Coral Gables, to their current home in Louisville Kentucky, the Pink Snails public art exhibit caught South Florida’s attention. Two of the snails that were defaced by graffiti during Art Basel have now received a new look by two renowned local artists and it’s all for charity.

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro commissioned Romero Britto and Jemal Wright to redesign the vandalized pink snail each with their own personal artistic style. The snails were auctioned off at the live auction during the Miami Children’s Museum’s Be A Kid Again 2011 Gala on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The gala, themed, It’s Never Too Late to Have a Happy Childhood,” will benefit the Museum’s educational programming.

The snails made their debut at Art Basel Miami Beach in December before moving to Coral Gables in January. The Pink Snails now reside in Kentucky, purchased by the 21C Museum Hotel, and await their debut at the Kentucky Derby 2011. During their stay on Miami Beach, two of the snails were defaced with graffiti and now have a new look for the Be A Kid Again 2011 Gala. The Pink Snail exhibit, curated by Gloria Porcella and Lamberto Petrecca of Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, is comprised of 25 large hot-pink snails (approximately eight feet tall and 11 feet long) and 20 small snails. The exhibit symbolizes nature created from recycled material and aims to inspire conversation about the importance of recycling and its environmental impact.

“After the Pink Snails were vandalized in Miami Beach, during Art Basel 2010, we were deeply saddened and received a lot of emails of support. My business partner and I came up with the idea that we wanted to turn a bad incident into a positive outcome as well as give back to the community. All for a good cause, such as the Charity event for Children, and thanks to the friendship and help of Romero Britto and Jemal Wright we were able to make this happened. The Pink Snails brought joy to the community and have been redesigned for an amazing cause.” – Gloria Porcella.

Recognized globally for his signature colorful pop-themed paintings and sculptures, Romero Britto is also an artistic activist for charitable organizations worldwide. “I was so inspired by these beautiful bright pink snails all over Miami,” said Britto. “Miami has so much energy. It’s such a great city and I’m so happy to be a part of this wonderful exhibition at such a great location, the Miami Children’s Museum! I want to thank Gloria for bringing so much happiness and energy to our beautiful city with the pink snails, and I hope you all come see the snail I painted at the Miami Children’s Museum!!” – Romero Britto

Joining Romero Britto in the pink snail redesign is Jemal Wright. Wright owns Jemal Wright Bath Designs for which he has become famous for his craft of metallizing fully functional bath fixtures including his own lines entitled “Chromeozone” and “Isis.” “When I heard that there was an opportunity to spruce up one of the vandalized snails, I instantly knew I wanted to be a part of this initiative,” says Wright. “The main appeal, of course, is that it will benefit children, but I am also eager to embrace the challenge of giving the snail my signature metallic finish.” – Jemal Wright.
