I made both prints around the same time, one on paper and the other on plywood. These were first attempts at capturing the mass and movement of a dancer through single images. One led to a new photographic portrait series, the other to life-sized sculptures. The two bodies of work grew, developed, and travelled off to shows–but these initial, instinctual pieces remained as constants in my studio. Â As unadorned and initially flawed drafts, they gained more resonance and weight to me as time passed.
As I incorporated steel, they eventually solidified as sculptures of their own.
A steel echoing the one of my studio door. A door where that silver dancer was held by magnets this whole time, saluting me at the end of each day before I turned the lights off on my way out.
